| Comments: Good day... Just wanted to share with you all the enjoyment I've gotten from reading your novels, particularly the Sharpe series. I'm actually re-reading them now in the order of when they occur during Sharpe's career. I just finished Sharpe's Enemy a couple of days ago, and I read your note at the back on how you wished you hadn't killed Obadiah; and wanted to offer this thought to you. When you read the books in chronological order, it's actually quite satisfying that you finally get to see Sharpe put an end to Hakeswill. The guy survived every other attempt of Sharpe's to kill him; and had he escaped yet again, I almost think your hero would have started to seem just slightly incompetent. I agree that if read in the order of the novels being published that Hakeswill departed a bit too early; but not that you've filled in much of Richard Sharpe's earlier career, it's quite fulfilling to see Obadiah be brought to justice by the time you get to Enemy. I'm also enjoying your Saxon stories as well; and as much as I'd like to see the next entry into that series, I'm hoping to see another Sharpe story soon as well. Again, sir... Thank you.

| Reply: Incompetent, I like that! You're right, I think, but Hakeswill was such a lovely character to write, and he did brighten the books. I'm tempted to discover his twin brother - Jedediah.
