A GAME OF THRONES

Written by: George R.R. Martin

This is the first book in the breathtaking George RR Martin fantasy series collectively known as "A Song of Ice and Fire."

The series is non-historical, but realistically medieval in most senses. The books bring to life a world bereft of the extremes of black and white which so clearly pervade most fantasies, and where violence and treachery lurk around every corner.

Martin masterfully weaves a massive and varied cast of characters into an inexorable collision course with one another, and the events unfolding in the world around them.

There is little in the way of magic and sorcery in these books, but intrigue, honor, cruelty, and the scorching heat of battle run rampant through their pages.

As an historian, I've always found the obligatory wizards and dragons of most fantasies off-putting, but could not more highly recommend these novels.
