DER SCHWUR DES NORMANNEN

(The Norman’s oath)

is the third novel of a German series of historic adventures covering the Norman conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily in the 11th century. This series is the fast paced and suspenseful tale of Norman mercenaries under the leadership of flamboyant Robert Guiscard de Hauteville, burning, robbing and fighting their way to supremacy in Southern Italy and thereby creating a powerful Norman dukedom which is later to become the Kingdom of Sicily. The story is told first person, in the tradition of Cornwell’s Uthred saga, by the young Norman Gilbert of dubious parentage who becomes Robert Guiscard trusted friend and henchman.

Volume I (The Norman's Sword) deals with the Normans as robber barons, culminating in the battle of Civitate against the Pope.

Volume II (The Norman's Revenge) tells the story of the public murder of the prince of Salerno and the Norman's terrible revenge.

This present third novel begins with Gilbert’s lover Gerlaine having been abducted by Saracen slavehunters. The trail leads to Moslem Sicily and so Gilbert and two of his friends plunge into unknown enemy territory with only the faintest hope of finding her.
