Hi Bernard, I am a great fan of yours, and think I have read and enjoyed all your books. A pleasant way to learn of our military history… I am half way through reading “The Fort” and feel compelled to point out to you a minor historical error in your writing… In the book you refer to part of McLean’s force as Royal Marines… Marines they might have been, but we didn’t become Royal until 29 April 1802, when George III directed that the Corps should henceforth be styled “The Royal Marines” in consideration of the very meritorious service of the Marines during the Revolutionary War. In-fact, at the time, Admiral The Earl of St Vincent said this of the honour: In obtaining for them the title of “Royal” I but indifferently did my duty. I never knew an appeal made to them for honour, courage or loyalty, that they did not more than realize my expectations. If ever the hour of real danger should come to England, they will be found the “Country’s Sheet Anchor”. I served for over 30 years with that Corps, and given the chance would do it all again… Many thanks for the pleasure and historical knowledge I have taken from your work…Please keep writing. Regards, Dave Barrett. M.S.M WOII (rtd) RM
