I just wanted to thank you for the Saxon tales. In the years 1968-1972, I went to Winchester four times where I worked on archaeological excavations. I excavated the streets where Alfred may have walked, worked in remnants of houses that stood during his time, even excavated graves of people he may have seen. One notable example was dubbed’ ‘Fraswitha’ who was found with a necklace of silver rings and several golden beads. We found her late in the evening near dusk and I was appointed the task of sitting up with her all night to make sure no one messed with her. They say you can’t go home again and I probably will never return. I understand some kind of horrid shopping center sits now on the site where I usually worked on Middle Brooks St. But still I always hoped my final days would be spent in a comfortable cottage within walking distance of several warm and inviting pubs in an inviting town. For almost 40 years, I have maintained a friendship with one of my friends from those days, Tim Arlott, the son of John Arlott. Who knows? Maybe I’ll make it back yet. Thanks Again Sincerely Yours, Joe Thornton
