Dear Mr Cornwell, My name is Colin and I am 31. I was introduced to Sharpe by my father who would let me watch the Carlton series on ITV. But recently I found myself reading “Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell” by Susanah Clarke.Which,as you probably know, is set during the peninsular war, and I suddenly realised that I had never read any of the Sharpe books! So! I promptly marched myself to Waterstones and found that the earliest book in the timeline they had was Sharpe’s Havoc. That was a month ago, I have now read Eagle, Havoc, Gold, Escape and half of Sharpe’s Battle, the last one I have enjoyed very much and love the character of Brigadier Loup (I dont know if he existed yet as I have not reached your historical note, which I always look forward to, like the out takes at the end of a Jackie Chan movie.) As I have been reading the books, I have also been re-watching the TV movies and thoroughly enjoying things I had never noticed before (Like Daniel Craig as Berry!!). This leads me to the point I would like to address…..We need a Sharpe movie!! Carlton did its best at the time, but you can not represent thousands of men with 100 extras! The Beauty of the Sharpe films is that we can all forgive the battle scenes because the characters steal the show. But the time has come for Sharpe to step up to the big screen. Britain needs it!! We need a British hero, in a movie that shows all the nations of Britain working together. Don’t get me wrong! I am as Scottish as they come and I am not some BNP official who thinks that Sharpe would make a grand posterboy for our next campaign, but I think this country needs a bit of inspiration and pride! I think we are all a bit proud that Bond is British, but, even though they have really tried in the last couple of attempts, there are too many explosions and not enough character. After Lord of the Rings, Master and Commander and 300, I think that people are ready to see a proper Napoleonic epic, guts and all! Warner Brothers must be realising that the Harry Potter series is coming to an end, so where are they going to make the millions now? Sorry to rant! I just think that a Sharpe movie is now possible and I would like to see Sharpe’s Eagle made into a big budget production with real stone bridges and everything! Also I never thought that anyone could fill Sean Bean’s boots until I saw a series called True Blood and found out that the main character, Bill Compton ( who looks scarily like my first impressions of Sharpe) is actually played by a guy called Stephen Moyer, who is from Essex!! This series is a worldwide hit, and sooner or later they are going to try to break this guy into movies. So should we let him become another romantic comedy casualty or give him the chance to be the hero, in what could be the most lucrative movie franchise ever!! I would like to finish by saying thank you. Not only for Sharpe and Harper, Hogan, Hagman, Harris ( I didn’t realise there were so many H’s) and the rest of your characters, but also for letting me learn while I was entertained and showing me the atrocities of war and the rich history of all the nations in the peninsular war. I will continue to read my way through the complete series and will cross my fingers that you would consent to a Sharpe movie, but even if you don’t, I reckon there will be a production of it this century on the big screen and maybe lawsuits….who knows I think if it does happen that you should be there to make sure they don’t mess it up! Thanks for reading, Yours Sincerely, Colin Robertson.
