Hi, I’m a big fan of both the Sharpe books and the TV series. One thing does bug me, although probably not very many other people, as it’s a bit of a specialist subject… Your historical detail is I suspect very well researched, and I’m no expert in most fields of history, but I am a dealer in old coins, and I must say that you have got the coinage wrong in several areas. For instance, in Sharpe’s Havoc which I am now reading, you mention “thick guineas with St. George slaying the Dragon”.. This is in 1809, and the first gold coins issued in Britain with that design were the sovereigns of 1816, the guineas in use in 1809 would have had a shield of arms on one side, and the bust of George III on the other. Also in another book where Sharpe is in France, mention is made of “silver 10 franc pieces” – again, these never existed, the largest silver coin was 5 francs and any 10 franc pieces would have been gold. I don’t mean this as any sort of criticism, the books are great in all other ways, but I hope it might be helpful if you ever revise them, to make them all the better for being thoroughly accurate! Keep up the good work! CJ
