Dear Bernard: The Last Kingdom Finally a Saxon hero and its been a long time coming — how long — probably not since the books Ivanhoe and Robin Hood. As a full-blooded Saxon, I get tired of either the sawdust Irish being portrayed as the in-heroic types or the Saxons written of as the bad guys. Everyone knows that there was no power on earth who could resist Saxon men-at-arms — if met on anywhere near equal terms. The Romans found out. And, I cannot wait to read more of exceptional, stalwart warrior Uhtred and imperium King Alfred. My ancestors are not British Isle Saxons but of another group — the Transylvanian Saxons– Saxons that migrated in a different direction. Outside of your book being a quality read and me being among the many passing on their praises, I just wanted to bring to your attention two books out there that might be of good references to use if you can possibly find them: Saxons Through Seventeen Centuries by John Foisel and Hans Bergel’s Siebenhurgen: A Picture History of Transylvania (Saxon).
