Hello again Mr Cornwell. I was trying to explain to a woman, who reads mostly romantic novels, the other day that you were much more than a writer of war stories, though I had to admit wars and battles do loom large. Fortunately I had the right book to hand and read her the following passage. ‘I do understand that you can look into someone’s eyes,’ I heard myself saying, ‘and suddenly know that life will be impossible without them. Know that their voice can make your heart miss a beat and that their company is all your happiness can ever desire and that their absence will leave your soul alone, bereft and lost.’ (Derfel in The Winter King for those that don’t recognise the lines). She had to admit after that that you do understand much more than battles and soldiers. Thought I’d share this with everyone who hears others scorn your work so they too can be put in their place. Regards Nigel James
