Señor Bernard Cornwell: I am a spanish who discovered your books (in spanish version) last summer. I read the three Arthur books in a week and now I´m reading the Sharpe books (I´m reading number V). Your books are amazing and I have two new friends Sharpe and Derfel with my spanish book friends like Capitan Alatriste. I really love UK, and I used to go there once or twice per year because I´m a rugby player and love to support England in Twickenham. I spend 3 months in Swansea. I have only good words for UK. The problem is that in Sharpe books always the spanish people are bad soldiers, thieves or worst people. In the Penninsula war England helped us for economics and political reasons not for sympathy or love for Spain. Your help was very important but you didn´t win the war alone. With the Bailen victory, England could keep fighting in Portugal, the plan for Talavera battle was made by Cuesta not Wellington ( you can read it in Miguel Artola books better than Oman books), we defeated France in Asturias o Galicia, alone. We can speak about Zaragoza or Gerona where we lost but we saw to the world the spanish honour. We lost many battles but we never surrender and won others many times (in incredible situations) and the most important, we fought for our land and our people. The british troops many times came back to Portugal leaving spanish army alone. The french people always said good things about how the spanish people (even our army) fought in the Penninsula War. In Trafalgar we lost but with honour and helping to the british sailors who arrived to our beaches after the battle. Then it is not good to read this things about a country who always fought and died with the head very high. Wellington never understood to the spanish people and he was under a important pression from the Parlament and politics. We apreciate the british help in this war but we fought like only the spanish do. When Napoleon spoke about attack Spain their generals said that it could be very dangerous for the spanish character and it was. Thank you for your books, my new friend, I will keep reading every Sharpe books but I hope you can enjoy my country and our peolpe the same way I enjoy my time in UK, and it maybe change your point of wiew. And is good read spanish books about the “Guerra de Independencia”. Best wishes, JORGE RODRIGUEZ
