Long time fan and reader, thanks for the happy hours of reading you’ve provided.  Question – I was watching the Sharpe TV series (again!) recently where Sharpe was reading and writing lists of supplies, adding up the numbers and updating ledgers etc.  Where did he learn to read and write?  Those skills were not that common in those days amongst the don’t-have’s, who taught him please?
