Dear Bernard,
I wanted to write by hand as there is much more elegance in the hand written word, but am grateful I have the opportunity to thank you through this modern medium.
Your books have re-ignited my passions for writing, reading and also re-forming my true passions- which are so easily lost in this materialistic and confusing world.
I have always been a fan of adventure stories and adored the ‘Sharpe’ series and books such as Last of the Moheicans’. I have always loved to write and for the past ten years endeavoured to write ‘Literary fiction’ and constantly failed.
It was recently when I picked up “stonehenge” that I had an epiphany that I was aiming for something false to myself, and my passion and excitement lies within historical fiction and adventure. I feel so much better knowing this and have started to write my first novel set in 55 BC England. I hope to send you a copy when it is published.
Thank you so much for writing your wonderful stories, they are literally life changing and life enhancing for me. I’m half way through Azincourt at the moment and I think Nicholas Hook is my favourite literary character ever!
I am a stonemason by trade and was trained at worcester cathedral where i worked for 8 years. This place grew my fascination and distaste for war and religion, but I loved the history of the place- the visible mutilations of statues during the reformation, the West door which once had a marauding Viking’s skin flayed across it as warnings to others, the egdar tower where the war was lost and gave the city the motto “the faithful city” …which also puts me at odds as I’m a staunch republican. I’m passionate about these stories, about the in- justice and vile behaviour of the church – maybe because I was raised in a fundamentalist religion (christadelphians). Anyway, your books and your words in interviews about your similar grievances and distaste has given me vision and encouragement to write from the heart and create something timeless, honest, and illuminating for myself firstly and hopefully for others.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of your books and also books from others you inspired such as Giles Kristian, whose Raven saga I enjoyed.
Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!
Kind regards,
James Robinson
