My fascination with Anglo-Saxon England never stops and your books are mercilessly adding fuel to the fire! And your answers are always very useful, so i would love your opinion on this: one of the most perfect taxation systems ever was exactly Anglo-Saxon money raising system. It started already in times of Ethelberht of Kent, which is late 6th century! It’s mind boggling because most of Europe was still drenched in chaos and barbarism. That system was further developed by later kings and perfected by Alfred and his heirs. So my question is: how on Earth did they manage to create such an efficient system in those cruel chaotic times(i’ve found no proof they’ve taken it from someone more “advanced”) and how did that system manage to survive all internal wars between Anglo Saxon kingdoms and all foreign invasions? And all that time they managed to finance their government, their army and even buy off Northmen when danger was too great. Once again, thank you for your time and patience!
