Hello Bernard

I hope you are well

I wanted to ask your opinion on something.

I am sure you are horrified and disgusted by the Neo-Nazi violence and murder in Virginia last week, but I wanted to ask you about this issue of removing or destroying Confederate statues. My understanding is that the threat to a statue of General Lee was the flashpoint  for this appauling violence.

I must admit to being uneast about destroying statues, because its oart of History, and if you take it away, you are santising it,. Also how far do we go with this? Richard the Lionheart committed a War Crime in the Holy Land, so are we in England going to take statues of him down?

On the other hand I understand completely why many Americans despise everything the Confederacy, General Lee and the Stars and Bars stood for, i.e. Slavery, and White Nationalism. And why they want the South to be rid of that.

I also saw footage of a Memorial being destroyed, and thought that was disrespectful to thge Dead.

What is your take on this?

I must confess I haven’t yet read any Starbuck’s, but know that that is a period of great interest to you.

Kind regards

P.s. As someone who is nearly blind, I found these new “I am not a Robot” virtually impossible to use, and had to get some help sending this!

P.P.s speaking of Richard the Lionheart…have you ever thought of tackling the Crusades? That would be brilliant!
