Dear Sir
Are there any fictional films/books that get you so engrossed you actually get emotional? Even annoyed at a character?
I think it’s the sign of great writing that somebody can get you happy/sad or even annoyed/angry either on a character’s behalf or at the character in question.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with Corporal Upham in Saving Private Ryan, but he really gets me shouting at my screen😀
Then of course there’s several occasions in Sharpe. Which series I maintain is pure genius. Whenever Sharpe gets wronged in some way of course. But whenever he’s triumphant or successful it inspires amazing feelings.
But then some of the characters also make you like them or dislike them….Simmerson, Ducks. Then you have Calvet who even before Sharpe’s Revenge he makes you like him. And then the moment in 2 of your books I get annoyed at characters for contrasting reasons. D’alembord for going back to the battlefield when he really didn’t need to and Bautista for demoting the Captain (who remained loyal to Blas Vivar) to a Private and sent him to the Chilean mines. I suspect Sharpe in the events after discovering this forgets to tell Blas Vivar?
And of course when Bautista has Sharpe’s guide murdered. You get sad on his behalf.
Do you have any examples where fictional books/films have inspired emotions in you?
Oh and please please PLEASE…..One more Sharpe?
