Throughout the books, Sharpe’s promotions are often highlighted and a big deal (sort of) is made of him getting promoted, except for one. Sharpe’s promotion to First Lieutenant is never mentioned as I recall (I could have missed it, but in 6-8 readings I doubt it). Can you shed some light on this subject? I initially thought he must have purchased it with the Tippoo Sultan’s jewels, but then I recalled him attempting to sell his commission and being told he couldn’t because he hadn’t purchased it.
