Loved ‘War of the Wolves’, love all the ‘Last Kingdom’  book series, loved the first two televised series, but  disliked the third. Maybe it’s because I’m reaching ‘mature’ years, but I found the violence too graphic (obviously catering to the younger market) and the characters are taken too seriously. Not Alfred of course, he’s always taken himself seriously, but Uhtred & Aethelwold?  Even Finan was too serious in his jesting!  Also, in giving Skade the centre stage, this series somehow lost it’s way. Oh well, maybe it’s those mature years creeping up. Talking of which, you happened to mention at the bbc history magazine weekend in Winchester that both you & Uhtred are getting a bit long in the tooth, so hopefully we’ll see a new book in this series in the not too distant future.
