I was introduced to you through the Television series “The Last Kingdom” (which I’m a big fan of so far), and have since purchased audio books of said series and enjoyed those as well.

My infatuation with the world presented in the television series was primarily due to what I felt was a realistic representation of a historical setting with believable characters and environments. This struck me as out of the ordinary from other entertainment.

My question to you is; do you perceive a trend in modern media and entertainment to portray traditionally European characters and stories as more ethnically and sexually “diverse” than the historical record would indicate?

As an example (though there are many) of this trend, you could look at the Game of Thrones series. It features many non-European characters, women who are occupying roles traditionally held by men, sexually deviant characters, and interracial relationships.

I’m aware that The Last Kingdom and Game of Thrones are not directly comparable, as one is a fantasy universe, and the other is a historical universe. But if you look at older fantasy stories such as Lord of the Rings, you do not see the unrealistically dominant females, racial mixing, and deviant sexuality that is found in Game of Thrones. So to me this seems like a modern trend.

Do you see a similar trend? What are your thoughts?
