There are fairly recent publishings that assert the collection of germanic tribes colloquially known as “Vikings” didn’t actually use shield walls, and that the small, light shields they used were there for active protection in battle. The publishings assert that they favored speed and surprise in battle to hiding behind a shield wall. Have you read those publishings and what do you think about that theory?
