Dear Mr. Cornwell,

Just had to say thank you for War Lord, thought it finished the Uhtred saga perfectly. I’ve enjoyed this series from the start, helped by the fact I was brought up in Cannington (Cantucton) Somerset and as a child played on Cynuit.

Local folklore said our village was part of Alfred’s estate, and his statue can be found above the West door of St. Mary’s church, Cannington. There was also a ‘dig’ in the 1960’s above the old quarry by Cannington Park, which uncovered an ancient burial ground. I remember going up to see dozens of early graves hewn out of the rock, and being told some were buried with weapons, and there was a suggestion of an early battle.

I do think the glutinous mud of the River Parret might have thwarted Uhtreds efforts to reach Ubba’s ships at the battle of Cynuit…but I’ll let you off, because it made a great ending to the Last  Kingdom.

Having re-read all the Saxon saga during Covid lockdown, I’m venturing back to the Napoleonics with Sharpe. I’ve also only just appreciated the Irish connection you incorporated into the books, Finan and Harper.

Look forward to which era you next tackle.
