Love your historical fiction! Vikings did probably use horns on helmets to provide critical protection of their shoulder muscles. The overhead blows from adversaries made such light but tough horns very functional. The devilish horns also gave a psychological edge. (Contrary to your statements at the end of “The Last Kingdom”)
