Hi Mr. Cornwell. In the Saxon books, you speak of some Danes as having helmets with raven or eagle wings. Were these real bird wings attached to the helmet, or just metal ornaments shaped like wings? If they were real, Ragnar’s eagle-winged helmet must have been pretty cumbersome! Also, everyone seems to have carved faceplates like on the Sutton Hoo helmet. I thought those were comparatively uncommon during the viking era. Was I wrong? Alan Kempner
