Dear Mr Cornwell, I am reading The Fort. I have to take you to task over a historical inaccuracy. The title ‘Royal’ wasn’t granted to the Royal Marines until the 29th April 1802, by King George III. Your novel predates this event by some 23 years. I say this as the son of a former Royal Marine Commando and D Day veteran who turned 88 last month! Kind Regards David Skinner
I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed all the books I’ve read of yours.I have never contacted anyone before reference their books but would just like to say that in your book THE FORT you refer to the marines as royal marines and as a former marine I know that they did not become royal until 1802. thankyou for a great book. Mick.
I have just finished reading The Fort and I am surprised, as normally your research seems to be so good, that you addressed the Marines in 1779 as Royal. As a past member of the Royal Marines the Corps changed its uniform from red to blue in 1802 and hence became royal so could not have been Royal Marines in 1779. However I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book. Michael Wyatt
hello, i am an great fan of your books, all of which i have read, so without trying to sound like a smart arse, id just like to point out in your last book ‘the fort’ your mention the royal marines, however they didn’t become ‘ROYAL’ until 1802 by king george the 3rd. still a great read as expected.
