When Sharpe makes Harper into a Sargent Harper says he will never be a proper Sargent. Sharpe replies so, I’ll never be a proper officer. Sgt. Harper tells Sharpe he will make a grand killing officer, an officer that gets you killed by mistake. Harper refers to Major Hogan as a murdering officer who gets you killed for a reason.
