Wow! I was so tempted  to skip to the end of The Pagan Lord to see whether you were going to end Uhtred’s story, that I almost succumbed!  Fortunately, I was able to get a handle on my desire and wait until the book ended. I found I was beginning to steel myself for the death of my friend Uhtred, as the last pages were read. I felt Uhtred’s father’s pride in his son, as young Uhtred built his reputation and added to his arm rings.
What an emotional roller coaster ride you took me on at the ending of this book!
I’ve become very ambivalent about reading your books because the closer I get to the end, the more anxiety I have about it ending!  It seems I never want them to end!
Truthfully, I have to say that in at least one way your books are discouraging to me.  I have been working sporadically on a historical novel myself for ten years, and  though I really love to read your books and admire your writing talent, when I consider my skills and ability in contrast to yours, it almost makes me want to throw in the towel!  I won’t, of course, but after reading the first paragraph of chapter three, five or six times, and then reading it to a few of my friends for good measure, I marveled at how high you have set the bar for me!  I can’t wait for my next visit with Uhtred and his son!
Thank you for working on your craft, setting the bar high, and using your talents to enrich our our lives and imaginations.   May your warrior’s spirit continue to provide vicarious adventures for us via your wonderful characters, and stories.
Your friend at the other end…of this email!
