I recently finished all three of the Warlord series. I enjoyed each one and after I read about Uhtred, I will return to read again The Winter King; Enemy of God; and Excalibur. What I found to be excellent was the integration of Roman civilization and how it affected the main characters of the series. And in fact, as I now read The Last Kingdom, to have Uhtred swim in the bath of Bath – excellent. What is profound is how the author Bernard Cornwell created that sense of plausibility of may happened between 480 and 525. When I finished I wanted to read more; so the only place I could go to was the Last Kingdom.
I would suggest this, that there is an equally important to story between 367 AD and 480 AD in the context of the War Lord series. And in fact, I also believe the story and or legends between Arthur’s time and Uhtred’s time is equally important. Thus, I don’t think it is finished ~ the story that is of the Britons especially! When Uhtred encountered the Welsh with their wild image, I thought – wow – what a change from the Britons who held a sense of Roman civilization within themselves in the War Lord series.. Great writing and loved it.
