I think I’m too old to write a fan letter, but I’ve just read the Warlord Chronicles while I was recovering from my hip operation. A terrific story, poignant and moving; it makes great use of locations in England most of which I know well. Happily, I’ve made a full recovery and am now intrigued enough to get out onto a rolling English road into Wales to search out those ancient places that were once so important.
I usually judge novels by how they compare with KM Briggs’ Hobberdy Dick or Rosemary Sutcliff’s Sword at Sunset. But I have an idea that the Warlord Chronicles may well be better than both of these magnificent books. I’m not going to confess this to anyone of course and I have a feeling that you’re a gallant gentleman and won’t mind too much. Bravo, Mr Cornwell,
