I just finished The Fort and I really enjoyed it. It had special meaning for me as I was part of a MIT/Maine Maritime team that located the Defence and brought up a cannon from the wreckage in 1972.
At the time we had discussed the failed Penobscot Expedition and seen Fort George but I never realized how close the Americans had come to achieving their goals.
In checking into all this I saw that an INA team had done a real archaeological excavation that put our couple of dives to shame but still, we saw it first (if you don’t count the generations of fisherman who had snared nets on it and therefore knew exactly where it was).
