Dear Bernard
This is just to say how much I enjoyed Waterloo. I read a lot of historical non-fiction, most of which is long on facts and explanations, but short on narrative. In my view you got the balance exactly right and turned what could have been a very dry historical treatise into an entertaining story, told extremely well. I was surprised to see how well the narrative approach you use in your fiction works transferred across into non-fiction.
I’ve previously read most of your work except the Sharpe novels, which I have dipped into in places, but would like to read in historical sequence – that might have to wait until I retire.
Thanks for all your work and the pleasure it has brought me since I picked up a copy of The Last Kingdom in a station bookshop a good few years ago. That was the start of a long and very enjoyable journey.
