I am reading Chapter 15 of Marc Morris’ book “The Norman Conquest” and I am compelled to offer condolences for the beheading of “Waltheof, a member of the house of Bamburgh, son of Earl Siward and Elfflaed, Granddaughter of Earl Uhtred” on May 31, 1076 atop St. Giles Hill.  Mr. Morris also writes that Waltheof was the “last English earl.”    Morris also notes that when Waltheof was approached by the leaders of this rebellion against the Normans he was recognized as the “last Englishman of any power and standing.”
