Dear Sir
Firstly, I apologise if you’ve had a glut of messages from other Bottings regarding Jemmy Botting! I have spent years researching my family and have found many interesting characters but none moreso than Jemmy. I have found much information about him from various sources (the best being The Hangmen of England) but wondered if you would be kind enough to give me any pointers to further reading. From reading your excellent book, the characterisation of Jemmy is exactly as I have found him in my searches. The fact that following his sad end, the local ‘constabulary’ clubbed together to provide some sort of funeral shows that, in some quarters, he was held in respect.
I live just 15 miles from his birthplace and our family have lived in this area of Sussex for (according to other researchers) for some 1500 years. Jemmys story has so much more to find.
Thankyou for taking the time to read this message.
Yours faithfully
Ruth Holter
