About Sharpe’s promotion to 1st Lieutenant, I don’t think it’s mentioned explicitly, but it is implied that Lord Pumphrey looks after Sharpe’s interests between Copenhagen and Corona – albeit mostly making sure he doesn’t get arrested for murdering the master of the foundling home. He could have arranged for the promotion in the general course of events.

Hi Mr. Cornwell.

In a October 29th posting, Charles Joseph Lewis commented that you never told the story of how Sharpe was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.  You said you couldn’t remember when it had happened and that it must have taken place between the stories. But I distinctly remember you explaining that it happened automatically when Sharpe transferred to the 95th Rifles, because they didn’t have a flag and thus no need of ensigns.
