Sir,

I have to say that I have really enjoyed the Netflix series “The last Kingdom”. That time when vikings ruled almost all of the England (or better to say that area which we now know as England).

Of course I understand that the series is entertainment, but it is very well made, and the stories as a base are truly fascinating.

I wonder if you were familiar about the story (/saga) about what happened to Vikings when they attacked to Finland / Häme about 1050? A Viking army of about 2000 men, ruled by Freygeir and assisted by Egil and Brus, attacked to an area where Finns had a warehouse of furs. The purpose was to take furs, and start collecting tax. The same procedure they had in multiple other “countries”.

Well, a long story short: The mighty Viking army lost badly. They had to escape. They never tried again. The next invasion happened when Sweden was Christian kingdom.

I know that this story is very subjective (I’m a Finn… ), and actually there was no country named Finland that time. Just separate tribes, who were also fighting each other. But I still think that this story is very interesting as Vikings did conquer almost the whole Europe. But failed and gave up here. Why? Maybe there are multiple reasons. But I personally believe that Vikings were not that much feared here as the local tribes were not that sophisticated either. The were not god fearing Christians. And maybe even more brutal than the attacker. Who knows..

Best regards,

Rainer
