Dear Mr Cornwell,
I don’t know if you are a great reader as well as a great writer but I am a reading addict.
Since I have, in my 70 years, moved every 3 years I can date fairly exactly when I did things.I know for instance that when I left Franchise Street in Birmingham at age 5 I was a fluent reader and I have never stopped reading since. I can place the first time I read one of your books: Northfield library, B’ham. Sharpe’s Rifles around 1994. I was hooked. I have now read every book you have written. Even the ones around the American Civil War, which has never much interested me.
Sharpe and Uhtred are my favourites undoubtedly.
Your writing about the Napoleonic War so captured me that I have spent many years learning as much about it as I could.
As an ex-teacher I am horrified that we teach virtually nothing about the time of the creation of England, concentrating on the Vikings and Ancient Egypt. On a visit to Egypt I was amazed to find that primary school children in UK learn more about ancient Egypt than Egyptians do.
What amazes me, particularly in Sharpe and Last Kingdom books, is how poetic and lyrical your writing is.
I am always pleased when I find an author I like that he/she has written many books; so I wish you long life, and more books please, with my heartfelt thanks for the entertainment and joy your books have brought me over the years.
Regards,
Val Holland
