Dear Mr Cornwell
Greeting from Nairobi Kenya. As a fan of English history your books have been a pleasure to read over the years. I have heard many times that you would never write a book about the English civil war due to your hate for the Puritans and that in your own words ‘the wrong side won’. However in my humble opinion I do think that if you did write about that period it might be your best work yet. As a person who has been around religious fundamentalists I can sympathise with your aversion to the subject. However the fact that this topic is so personal to you might be just the best recipe for success. The best writers over the years such as Dostoevsky or Shakespeare have given some of their main characters personalities that they themselves disagree with. Just imagine yourself writing about a fanatical Puritan soldier in Cromwell’s army who you yourself hate. If I were you I would go so far as to make this man the main character of your book as that would be a true challenge. Thanks for taking the time to read this and condolences for your dog Whiskey. Oddly enough I also had a dog called Whiskey who died two years ago.
