Mr. Cornwell,

I am not sure how I survived to 58 without reading the exploits of Richard Sharpe. Then again, it was the discovery of Thomas of Hookton that led me to it and I am glad it did. My late father-in-law, a learned man himself, once said to me in response to my comment that I was just then at age 29 beginning to read Sherlock Holmes stories, “I envy you!”, referring to the reading that lay ahead. He had already read them all. He would probably say the same now that I’ve discovered Sharpe!

A small good-natured beef…would the British Army really act on an unsubstantiated assault without first talking with the accusee, and then to top it off, send the man making such a complaint to bring him in? Not sure, but then it wouldn’t be as good a story if Hakeswell had fed the tigers….

All the best,

Steve Kohler
