The covers illustrated here are all from the first editions, long out of print, thought reprints are now becoming available. Jac was an American engineer, real estate agent and military enthusiast who developed a lifelong fascination with the first Duke of Wellington. I once asked him why and he answered 'because he was the greatest general ever', there was a pause, then the growl 'and I could have beaten him'. Maybe. Jac was a tall, forceful and capable man who brought an engineer's eye to the Duke's campaigns and that is what makes these three books so interesting. They are written with great sympathy for the Duke and with an intelligent eye for the terrain on which he fought; terrain that Jac knew well for he spent weeks walking all the battlefields. There are plenty of good books on Wellington's battles and campaigns, but these three, I think, belong on the shelf of anyone who takes a serious interest in the Napoleonic wars.
