This is the first volume of Elizabeth Longford's great two volume biography of the first Duke of Wellington and it ends with the battle of Waterloo. Sharpe, of course, shadows the Duke in these years, so this is a splendid source in which to follow the career and achievements of Sharpe's reluctant patron. It is beautifully written, a masterpiece of storytelling and Lady Longford's description of Waterloo is among the best ever done.
