I enjoyed Uhtred’s six books. You mentioned that an army must be well financed and I wondered where the people of that era got their gold and silver. It seems that these rich locations would be the first targets for conquest. I also realize that the churches hoarded the precious metals and gems, so I don’t know how there was still enough for the general economy to thrive and where the coins were minted.
