Mr. Cornwell, I am reading “The Burning Land”. A comment on Page 153 stopped me cold: “There it is,—the English Kingdom”. (Ragnar referring to the NE coastland between Durham and Bamburg.) I have never heard or read of that description and cannot find it in historical atlases or other references. The reason I’m asking about this is that my great grandmother came from Belford (probably in sight of Bamburg castle) and her maiden name was ENGLISH. Her family farmed in that area. She, along with many others, went to the Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham area in the 1860’s. My Great Grandfather came from Cornwall about the same time (thus my name) and they married in 1873, subsequently moving to the iron mining area of upper Michigan, etc. Could you please put me in touch with any references that might lead me to an understanding of where the name ENGLISH originated–or how? This has been a decades-long family question and we have come upon No Clues. Thank you for reading this. I have read the Saxon stories and have recommended them in several places for boys who cannot seem to “—get interested in reading.” Great tales!! Sincerely, Kenneth Exworthy
