If anyone wonders why Alfred is called The Great, they have only to read this book. Actually, it's not only a biography but an overview of everything that was happening in England during this time period.
The book is a fascinating combination of written records, archaeological findings and educated speculation by the author. Within the book are photographs of places associated with Alfred, well documented historical notes including those on the authenticity of Asser and an extensive bibliography. None of this should scare anyone off because the engaging, readable style of the book gives it the flavor of a novel. For readers who are enjoying Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories, this makes an excellent companion piece.
