After seeing the film "Glory" I was very interested in learning more about the central character Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. I found this book and was immediately taken by the intimacy of it. Reading Shaw's actual letters gave me a window into his private thoughts, his worries, his hopes, what amused him. I read his letters knowing what he did not at the time, that he would be dead in two years, and that added an extra poignancy to everything. A wonderful book.
