GODS AND LEGIONS

This is a compelling historical novel set in the time of the late Roman Empire, a story of a great military commander and an epic of war. Youthful scholar Julian is set up as a co-emperor in the 4th Century, but, rather than failing as expected, shows a genius for leadership that leads to his challenging the emperor himself. There are stirring scenes of combat and fascination in following the rise of a most unlikely military hero. The backdrop of a weakening empire beset by enemies is wonderfully recreated. The story also provides grounds for speculation concerning the Roman Empire: was there any way that it could have reversed its decline? Interesting parallels can be drawn to today, as Julian faces his greatest challenge in a campaign in Mesopotamia--today's Iraq.
