Jean Valjean is released on parole after 19 years of slavery.
He manages to borrow a room from the Bishop of Digne, yet late at night he steals some silver and flees.
He is caught by constables and brought back to the Bishop who sets him free.

10 years later he has become Mayor of Vigaue and all seems well, yet out of his past come the old prison guard Javert who is now an inspector in charge of the Vigaue District.
Javert never forgets and he forgives just as rarely.
He witnesses Valjean rescue a man from a cart and realises that this is the man he has hunted, this is Jean Valjean only he could be so strong.
Later the Police capture a man who is believed to be Valjean, he is sent to trial yet in comes Valjean and he tells the truth of his past.
He manages to flee and rescue Cosette, the daughter of a dead factoryworker and he gets her safe in Paris.
Many years later Valjean and Cosette move from the Abby where they have been living into central Paris where Cosette falls in love with the leader of the revolutionaries who are planning to raise rebellion against the goverment.
The revolutionaries are killed but Valjean manages to save Marius in whom his daughter is in Love.
He is caught by Javert and arrested.
Javert desides he can not send the man who spared him from dying to prison and so he throws himself into the river Seine.

It is a brilliant book that has been made into a musical which is one of the world's most famous plays, you must read it and watch the play!
