THE FORGOTTEN SOLDIER: WAR ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT

Written by: Guy Sajer

In a nutshell (and without giving too much away): Guy Sajer, French father, German Mother, gets conscripted into the Wehrmacht. After some horrific work details and re-provisioning duties on the Eastern Front, when all seemed to be going well for Germany, he and his comrades volunteer for the Grosse Deutschland division after being tempted by two weeks leave.
I must admit to buying this book in a sale (for £4) but could not put it down. A graphic account of the horrors of war on the Eastern Front, it perfectly illustrates the comradeship-in-arms of soldiers, irrespective of which side they were fighting on.
The last paragraph brought me close to tears, as M Sajer details himself as one of the people lost during this campaign.
