THE HORNS OF THE BUFFALO

It's 1879 and Lt. Simon Fonthill is dispatched to South Africa for his first taste of active service, having been branded a coward by his former C.O. Not to original a start I know, but his subsequent secret mission into Zulu territory, along with his servant "352" Jenkins, is fraught with danger which still prevails when he escapes back to the British lines, only to be pitched straight into their massacre by the Zulu impi at the Battle of Isandlwana. Realising the tiny garrison at Rorke's Drift is directly in the line of the Zulu's advance he sets off to warn them but there's trouble on the way! A good read and the beginning of a series. Jacket blurb states "a young hero fit to stand shoulder to shoulder with Hornblower or Sharpe on any battlefield of the nineteenth century"
