THE NAKED ISLAND

So not a recent publication (1951, in fact) but I have only just read it after several years of intending to do so, and I now wish I had read it as soon as feasibly possible. Although many are probably already familiar with it, Braddon, an Australian, was a POW in Japanese hands during the Second World War. It is a frankly astonishing account of his experiences, and anyone who reads who is not affected at all must be a tin can. It's not particularly pleasant, but it does show how horrificly brutal human beings can be to one another. Personally, I think it is a hugely important book to read, and Braddon does not force his opinion on you; you must draw your conclusions yourself.
