UNDER THE EAGLE

I'd be surprised if this series hasn't made its way on here by now - it's so like Sharpe that some people thought Bernard himself must have written it! It's an enjoyable read set in A.D. 43, with the Roman invasion of Britain. The series progresses wonderfully, with each instalment better than the last. Think Sharpe in Roman times, with the barbarian hordes standing in for the French!

These books are a fantastic read, based on the Roman conquest of Britain in the first century AD. They wonderfully portray the structure and workings of the Roman legions, and are written by an author, who similar to Cornwell, imbues his books with all the passion, adventure, betrayal, ambition, brutality and rip-roaring action that colour the historical context in which the book is set. Brilliant stuff. Louis Ryan
