This book offers a good look into the situation and life in Middle East and Europe in the 12th century.
Basically, it's a dual biography of Richard and Saladin, centered on their fight for the old Kingdom of Jerusalem in the Mid East.
James Reston seems to have a good knowledge of both Christian and Islamic history, quoting passages from the Bible and the Koran alike.
It's a good book to read if you want to read about the encounters of two of 12th century's military commanders. This book also showed you the roots of many Christian-Moslem problems today.
However, if you seek for detailed biography of Richard or Saladin, or a detailed military discussion on the campaign, you can skip this book.
